On a cloudless July afternoon, Bill Clinton ran a stop sign in Oklahoma on his way to Arkansas. Midway through Oklahoma, Bill is immediately pulled over by a Deputy Sheriff. As Bill Clinton’s car comes to a complete stop the deputy gets out of his car then walks over to talk to him. Bill, however, smiles as he knows he is smarter than this backward, country bumpkin, Okie deputy from this Oklahoma rural county. Clinton is absolutely certain that this country bumpkin is not as well educated as he is and to prove this he decided to have some fun at the deputy’s expense.
“Driver’s license, registration and insurance verification, sir,” said the deputy.
“What for?” responded Clinton.
“You failed to come to a complete stop at the stop sign, Sir!”
“Hey deputy, I slowed down and when I didn’t see any driver in the opposite lane I just went on through.”
“Sir, you did not come to a complete stop as stated by law. A law that is consistent in every state in the United States. Driver’s license, registration and insurance verification, sir, please.”
“What’s the difference?”
“Sir, the difference is this—you have to come to a complete stop before proceeding into the intersection. Sir, that’s the law.”
Deputy, if you can show me the legal difference between “slow down” and what “stop” is I’ll give you my license, insurance verification and vehicle registration. If you can’t, then let me go ahead with no ticket or a warning. Okay?”
“Sir, if you would please, could you exit your car. Sir, may I have permission to demonstrate? If I appropriately demonstrate your point, you will present what I requested, accept the tickets your will receive and you will not sue me, my department or the State of Oklahoma for my demonstration. Okay?”
“Alright! Okay! You’re on! Show me! I agreed to everything you just said” responded Bill Clinton
Within the twinkling of an eye, the young deputy whipped out his nightstick and began to beat the crud out of Bill Clinton and he said:
