Why Calvary in Savannah as a church home? First, at Calvary
in Savannah you will discover an emphasis on the WORD OF GOD. We believe that the uncertain sounds of our society are met and overcome by concrete principles and precepts found in Scripture. The preaching/teaching endeavors of this church are intentionally designed to demonstrate how the Bible intersects with the everyday transactions of life. For counsel that is as challenging as it is comforting, as relevant as it is reassuring, Calvary
in Savannah is the place.
Second, at Calvary in Savannah you will discover an emphasis on the WORSHIP OF GOD. We believe that worship is meant to be a magnificent encounter in which the Divine and the human meet – an event that facilitates a personal interaction between God and those who seek Him. For a worship experience that is exciting, vibrant, and uplifting, Calvary
in Savannah
is the place.
Third, at Calvary in
Savannah
you will discover an emphasis on the WARMTH OF GOD. We believe that caring for others is a vital part of congregational life. Those who are active here find that their joys are double while their sorrows are halved. For friendship that encourages the heart and lightens the load, Calvary
in Savannah
is the place.
Fourth, at Calvary in
Savannah
you will discover an emphasis on the WORK OF GOD. We believe that the Christian church has the most important mission on earth, that the church, with its message of life in Christ, is the hope of the world. Indeed, all who follow Christ are ministers and play a significant role in our reaching/teaching/ caring initiatives. For opportunities of service that make a real difference, Calvary
in Savannah
is the place.
I extend to you a personal invitation to experience what God is doing through the ministries of Calvary
in Savannah. We are a fellowship of Christian disciples who believe that God has placed us in the heart of Savannah for the purpose of influencing our community in a life-transforming way. We want to be a blessing to you, and we are confident that you will be a blessing to us. Calvary
in Savannah
just may be the place for you.
Calgary's
Philosophy of Ministry and Leadership
Senior
Pastor, Dr. John S. Connell
With all my heart, I believe
that God brought me into this world to preach.
Like Jeremiah, before I was in the womb God
destined me to proclaim His Word. My highest
desire is not only to feed the sheep God has
placed under my care but also to prepare for them
a feast.
A pastor should be a teacher as
well as a preacher. One of his primary
responsibilities is that of equipping the saints.
I purposefully involve myself in the numerous
training endeavors of the church, and I provide
ample time during Wednesday night Bible study for
questions concerning any area of Scripture,
theology, or world events as they relate to a
biblical perspective.
If a church is to grow, a pastor
must be an administrator and leader. He
should be able, through the power of the Holy
Spirit, not only to care for the details of daily
ministry and the implementation of ongoing
programs, but he must also have the ability to
stir the people to action and to a vision
concerning their personal lives, their church, and
their community.
Every pastor is called to do the
work of an evangelist. He is greatly helped
in that work if he has also been gifted as an
evangelist. It has been my privilege,
through personal evangelistic encounters, to lead
many to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Among the staff, the role of the
pastor is one of guidance and coordination.
He must make sure that the programs of the church
are operating in harmony, that each department is
moving toward its greatest potential. The
pastor must understand the needs of the staff both
personally and corporately. He must allow
them to use their creativity and abilities in the
unique capacities given to them by God. He
must give them freedom to work and demonstrate
open support for their labors. However, the
staff must understand that the pastor is the
pastor. Thus, he has the responsibility not
only to direct but also to re direct. When
the pastor must make a difficult decision,
the staff must be willing to accept that decision
graciously. Problems that develop within the
staff should be kept within the staff and handled
in prompt, mature, and godly fashion.
Among lay leadership, I believe
that an indispensable characteristic of a growing
church is a broad base of lay leadership.
The taller the structure the broader the base must
be. A church cannot be effective if all is
built upon one man or a handful of people. A
pyramid is not stable when standing on one point;
neither is a church. All of the people
should have some responsibility as opposed to some
of the people having all the responsibility.
The pastor and staff must see
that the many leaders and workers of the church
receive proper training for their specific area(s)
of ministry. Volunteers perform ably when
adequately equipped and motivated. Church
leaders and workers are not to view themselves as
working for the pastor and staff but with the
pastor and staff - co laborers in the task of
ministry, each with a vital and unique function
within the body of Christ. The people are
not present to help the pastor and staff do the
work of the church, rather, the pastor and staff
are present to help the people do the work of the
church.
